Periodical Indexes

  • General Business File of InfoTrac, an electronic index to over 900 business, management, and trade journals and newspapers, contains directory listing for over 150,000 companies, and investment analyst’ reports on industries and major companies.

  • Predicasts F&S Index: U.S. Edition, print index of information on industries, products, companies, from 750 trade journals, special reports, and other business publications.

  • Business Periodicals Index, a print index to over 300 business periodicals.

  • Don’t forget to check out your public library’s selection of pamphlets. Look under Industries, or specific types of industries, Service Industries, or High Technology Industries, or for demographic information, arranged alphabetically by subject.

    Online Electronic Databases

  • Moody’s Company Data Direct, online database, provides extensive information on publicly traded companies.

  • ReferenceUSA, online database covers more than 10.5 million businesses in the U.S. and can be searched geographically, by type of business, etc. Information includes information on company executives, number of employees, and sales volume.

    Industry Statistics and Surveys

    • Adams Job Almanac, profiles of 7,000 companies, arranged by industry. Descriptions include common positions, educational backgrounds and benefits. For each industry, there is a listing of associations, magazines, online services and other information sources.
    • The American Almanac of Employers, focuses on 500 large, growing companies that are likely to hire. General information for job seekers, including web sites, how to research companies and outlook for specific industries and occupations. Company information includes salary and benefits, rankings based on growth and sales, observations about the firm’s reputation, and growth and hiring practices.
    • CorpTech Directory of Technology Companies, four volumes covering over 50,000 companies that manufacture or develop high technology.
    • NAICS/SIC Codes: The United States Manual 1997, the North American Industry Classification System as used jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Replaces the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Manual of 1987. Many indexes, directories, and statistical sources are organized by the NAICS code.
    • Standard and Poor’s Industry Surveys, Survey articles for 52 industry categories. Includes in-depth industry, profiles, trends and current, operating environment, key ratios and statistics, glossary, and industry information sources. Updated quarterly.
    • Gale Country & World Rankings Reporter, markets and marketing section includes sales data and rankings for selected products, import and export data, and sources for further research.

    • Market Share Reporter, Or World Market Share Report, Both are annual compilations of reported market share data on companies, industries, products and services. Data for private, public and international businesses.
    • Dun’s Census of American Business, a statistical reference covering 9 million U.S. businesses. Displays a number of establishments in each line of business and groups them according to sales volume and number of employees, at national, state, and county levels, published annually.
    • Business Rankings Annual, over 25,000 public and private businesses ranked by sales volume and employee size and within state and industry category.
    • The Career Guide: Dun’s Employment Opportunities Directory, annual directory covers more than 6,000 companies, listing information of interest to job-hunters such as disciplines hired, training, benefits, and internships.
    • U.S. Industry & Trade Outlook, replaces U.S. Industrial Outlook. Industry reviews, analysis and forecasts are based on data from public and private sectors. Hundreds of geographical snapshots illustrate industry and trade trends for U.S. and international industries.
    • Encyclopedia of American Industries, a comprehensive resource on American manufacturing, non-manufacturing and service industries. Individual essays provide detailed information, including important historical events, relevant trends and statistics, profiles of major companies, work force characteristics, research and technology. Includes suggested resources for additional research.
    • Encyclopedia of Emerging Industries, describes newly flourishing industry segments, ranging from cigars to web developers, includes industry snapshots, background, current conditions, industry leaders, and international aspects.
